Sunderland fans tribute to NUFC supporters lost in Flight MH17

We came across something very moving last night online.

The rivalry between Newcastle United and Sunderland fans is one of the fiercest in football, but one Sunderland fan’s decision to raise money for the two Newcastle supporters lost in Flight MH17 reminds us that there are much more important things in life.

Initially hoping to raise £100 for a floral tribute for John Alder and Liam Sweeney, the total raised so far has reached a staggering £14,680 and is rising by the hour.

The fundraising page ( was created by Sunderland fan Gary Ferguson and has received donations from hundreds of his fellow supporters, many of them leaving touching messages of condolence alongside their amount.

A statement by Gary on the page reads, “We may be Sunderland fans, who traditionally have deep rivalry with Newcastle, but there are things far more important than any football games”.

It is great to see the region unite after such a terrible tragedy.

RIP John and Liam
