Newcastle legend and all-time Premier League top scorer has revealed who would be in his best XI, if he were to pick from all the players he has played with for both club and country.
The former Southampton and Blackburn striker had a playing career spanning nearly 20 years and represented England 63 times – so he had a lot of former team-mates to choose from.
His selection features 4 former Newcastle players, excluding Big Al himself, who takes up the role of manager in Shearer’s All-Star XI.
A few of the players teamed up with Shearer for both club and country – with 5 members of the squad having only played alongside him for England.
Here is his selection…
Colin Hendry is the only player to make the cut from the Blackburn’s Premier League winning team of the 1994/5 season, in which Shearer was top scorer.
Matthew Le Tissier was Shearer’s team-mate during his spell at Southampton and also during his England days. Gazza, although a team-mate in the England national team (most notably during Euro ’96), was long gone from St James’ by the time Shearer arrived for a record £15million in 1996.
It seems like a pretty good line-up and it must have been a difficult process to narrow it down to 11 from all the possible candidates.
A few star players who didn’t make the list include Peter Beardsley, David Ginola, David Beckham, Michael Owen and Rio Ferdinand – although we are sure there are plenty more who would have also been considered.
