Newcastle United 1993 Season Preview

The 2015/16 Premier League season is about to start and Newcastle fans are excited at the prospect of a new campaign following the addition of some exciting summer transfers. Hopefully there will be a few more names to add to the team sheet before the Magpies get their season under-way against Southampton at 1.30pm on 9th August.

Fans may be more excited during this pre-season than perhaps they have been for a couple of years, but the buzz around Tyneside is nothing compared to what it has been in the past, as the video below shows.

This clip is of the Newcastle United 1993 Season Preview from an episode of Football Focus, which aired on 14th August. Newcastle United had just secured promotion to the Premier League, one year after it was created and the mood on Tyneside was extremely buoyant, as you can imagine!

Just as everyone hoped, it turned out to be a great first season for Newcastle in the Premier League. They finished 3rd and recorded the biggest win by any club in the entire season with a 7-1 thrashing of Swindon.

Andy Cole also finished as the Premier League’s top scorer with an impressive 34 goals, which was 3 more than Alan Shearer managed for Blackburn Rovers.

As shown in the image above, the Cole-Beardlsey partnership was the most prolific that the Premier League has ever seen, despite Pedro being injured for the start of the 1993/94 campaign.
