Newcastle’s 6-2 win over newly promoted Norwich was their first Premier League victory since the final day of last season, when they secured their own status in England’s top league by beating West Ham in a very nervous encounter. Despite a tricky opening set of fixtures in this campaign, few fans would have thought they would have to wait until the 3rd week in October to taste victory in the league once again.
Yesterday the fans were treated to three much needed points combined with a memorable performance, in a game which could prove to be the turning point in a season that looked set to be full of more disappointment.
Getting the win was the priority, but the way in which it was achieved will surely give the fans and players confidence ahead of the Wear/Tyne Derby next weekend. Newcastle’s defence was once again very questionable, but when a team can attack like they did yesterday against the Canaries, there is always the chance of something special occurring.
Perhaps attack is the best form of defence…
It’s been a long time since St James’ Park witnessed free-flowing attacking football like that, from the home side anyway. At times it was reminiscent of ‘The Entertainers’, Kevin Keegan’s team who lit up the Premier League at the end of the 1990s with sublime attacking performances.
Yesterday, several former NUFC players took to Twitter to congratulate the current team’s performance against Norwich…
