Newcastle City Council to offer homes to 50 Syrian refugees

The death of 3 year-old Aylan Kurdi shocked the entire world this week, as pictures of him lying face-down on a beach near Turkish resort of Bodrum circulated throughout the news channels and social media.

These distressing images showed the tragic plight of the Syrian refugees and the horror unfolding on the shores of Europe.

Newcastle City Council have since announced that they will be offering asylum for around 50 refugees here in the city, although the Liberal Democrats suggest more families should be accommodated.

Although this news comes just a couple of days after the images of Aylan Kurdi made the headlines, it is believed that negotiations between the council and the government regarding the Syrian crisis have been going on since January 2014.
