An announcement was made yesterday that will please keen travellers from the region. Direct flights from Newcastle to New York will begin in May 2015, courtesy of United Airlines.
Passengers will be able to reach ‘The Big Apple’ in just under 8 hours, making it the longest scheduled direct route from Newcastle International Airport in terms of distance and duration of flight. On arrival Newark airport is just 14 miles from Manhattan and is generally considered to be the most convenient airport for New York city.
The announcement is the biggest of its kind since Emirates revealed plans to operate a daily direct service to Dubai, which started on 1st September 2007. This route has proven to be very popular, allowing passengers direct access to the vibrant city of Dubai and many other long distance destinations via the Emirates hub. Prior to this, a connecting flight from Heathrow or one of the UK’s bigger airports was needed in order to reach destinations further afield. Newcastle airport is dominated by budget carriers, and whilst there are many direct routes to European destinations, there is little on offer in terms of long-haul travel.
The direct service to New York will also provide the possibility of travel to around 100 non-stop connections with United Airlines through Newark Airport. This will give customers easy access to many other US cities as well as destinations in the Caribbean, South America, Asia and Canada.
Flights are due to commence on 23rd May 2015 and will run daily from Newcastle except on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Prices for an economy ticket will be around £549 return with seats also available in ‘EconomyPlus’ and ‘BusinessFirst’, where passengers will be able to enjoy the luxury of a seat which turns into a 6ft flatbed.
Newcastle Airport will celebrate its 80th birthday next year and this announcement has been enthusiastically received by business owners who expect it to give a boost to the local economy.
