Newcastle United and Ivory Coast midfielder Cheick Tiote has found himself in the papers again this morning after a photo of him driving was discovered whilst holding an open bottle of champagne.
Tiote has apologised for the incident, which allegedly occurred in the Ivory Coast, after being reprimanded by the club,
I deeply regret my actions and I am sorry for any offence caused. I realise that as a professional footballer I have a responsibility to many people, including the club and its supporters and it is important for me to set a good example to others with my behaviour on and off the pitch.
This news comes just two weeks after a picture of him wearing an Arsenal shirt, a team which he has been closely linked to during recent transfer windows, was posted on Facebook much to the anger of many Newcastle fans.
It has been a busy year for Tiote in terms of defending his questionable actions. In September he defended his ‘lifestyle choice’ of having two wives as well as a mistress claiming it is part of his culture and perfectly acceptable in his native country to have multiple partners. Reports suggest that he lives Ponteland with first wife and their two children but he recently travelled back to the Ivory Coast to marry a second woman. He also has a one year old child with a Zimbabwean mistress, Nkosiphile Mpofu.
Tiote was also given a seven-month suspended sentence last year and narrowly avoided prison after he admitted possession of a fake driving licence. The Judge in charge of the case stated that the football star avoided jail time because he pleaded guilty and suggested that 180 hours of unpaid community work would be beneficial to society due to the player’s status in the North East.
This latest revelation involving an open bottle of champagne whilst driving will do nothing to help his image and fans will no doubt be angered that a player for Newcastle United could act so irresponsibly and be such a poor role model for youngsters.
