A recent post on a popular Newcastle United Facebook group asked its members to name the best goal they can remember being scored by their beloved team in recent years. As you can imagine, there were a lot of responses. Despite Newcastle fans having very little to be proud about over the last few years, there have still been some awesome goals scored by the team since Mike Ashley took over as the club’s owner. But, as you would probably predict, the majority of suggestions came from the pre-Ashley era.
Here is a list of the 5 best Newcastle United goals, as voted by members of the Newcastle United FC Supporters – Toon Army Facebook group.
5. Hatem Ben Arfa vs Bolton 09-04-2012
Ben Arfa’s talent was never in doubt but unfortunately things didn’t work out for him at Newcastle as well as fans would have hoped. Described often as “one of the best-rated talents in France”, it was his discipline that ultimately let him down. Still, the goal he scored against Bolton in 2012 was one of several memorable moments the Frenchman had in a Newcastle shirt.
4. Pappis Cisse vs Chelsea 02-05-2012
Newcastle fans will remember this game for a long time. Two great goals by Pappis Cisse saw the Magpies record a surprise victory at Stamford Bridge but it is his second goal of the game which has made it on our list. Cisse’s wonder-strike took his tally to 13 goals in 12 since he joined the club during the January transfer window of 2012.
3. David Ginola vs Ferencvaros 29-10-1996
Number 3 on the list is a wonderful goal scored by another Frenchman, one who will always be a Newcastle legend unlike Ben Arfa. David Ginola was a key part of ‘The Entertainers’ team which lit up the Premier League in the mid to late 1990’s. His goal against Ferencvaros in the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup was something very special indeed.
2. Philippe Albert vs Manchester United 20-10-1996
October 1996 was a great month for wonders-trikes at St James’ Park. Number 2 on our list was scored just 9 days before Ginola’s brilliant strike in the UEFA Cup. ‘Philippe, Philippe Albert. Everyone knows his name’ – this was the chant that bellowed out of the stadium following the Belgian’s goal against Manchester United. The fifth and final goal of a 5-0 drubbing against the Red Devils – surely one of the most memorable games at St James’.
Such a cheeky lob from outside the box over arguably the Premier League’s best ever goalkeeper – a perfect way to end the perfect game. You can still buy the full game on DVD from Amazon here: Howay 5-Oh [DVD]
1. Alan Shearer vs Everton 01-12-2002
It’s no surprise that Newcastle’s (and the Premier League’s) all-time top scorer also tops our list. With so many memorable goals to choose from, the challenge was picking the best.
His volley against Everton in 2002 was an absolute peach of a strike and thoroughly deserves its place as the best NUFC goal.
